Stephen Fry as Juvenal

00/385 02 Laughter and Loathing - The Satires of Juvenal

This might provide some amusement but apart from the redemptive feature of Fry's witty delivery, Hislop comes across as slightly out of his element and Auberon Waugh's comments are in my opinion way off the mark. Clearly a man who doesn't really have too much time for Juvenal. Its not a hugely perceptive piece but worth a look. Vale! Link details below.

  1. Thanks for the link, I enjoyed it, I guess Waugh was included to put a sceptical view. Juvenal sounds great, can't wait to read it properly.

  3. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I think that the piece works as a general introduction to Juvenal but they make the typical error of the non classicist pace Green of looking at him through the Swiftian or Johnsonian lens. By the way let me know if you have any preference re particular satires or themes.

  4. I've ordered a copy of Green's translation so will let you have some thoughts when I've had chance to look through it, though I'm sure you're choices are fine.
